It’s almost the 4th of June and we know what it really means! This means the third installment of The Conjuring series is about to go live. While Horror enthusiasts are getting prepared to witness one of the most controversial investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren, we also were intrigued by the way the trailer is fashioned as it raised a lot of questions.
As we all might be knowing that the story of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It reportedly based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, aka the “Devil Made Me Do It” case where Arne Cheyenne Johnson from Connecticut was convicted for the killing of his landlord, Alan Bono. This was the first known court case in the history of America in which the convict defended himself by claiming that he was the victim of demonic possession. This was one of the most publicized cases of demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.
But recently we learnt from an interview of the director of the film, Michael Chaves that though the film was inspired by these real life incidents, the way the story is told in the film is inspired from something different. Chaves said he didn’t want to bind his film into the set & conventional patterns of the horror stories and that’s why he took the storytelling inspiration from Brad Pitt & Morgan Freeman starrer ‘Seven’, directed by David Fincher. ‘Seven’ was an extremely popular crime thriller of 1990s’ and considered one of the best crime related films of all time. The film revolves around David Mills, a detective who teams up with a veteran detective William Somerset to track down a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as a motif in his murders. Chaves patterned the characters Ed & Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It as the detective duos of Seven and used a number of plot points inspired by the cult film. The most surprising thing to imagine is that this horror film is not actually inspired from another horror story and we feel, that makes the third installment of The Conjuring a more special one.
We have already learnt that apart from Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprising their much-talked-about roles of Ed and Lorraine Warren, Ruairi O’Connor will portray Arne Cheyenne Johnson. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is directed by Michael Chaves and produced by Peter Safran alongwith James Wan. Wan has also co-wrote the story with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.
As mentioned earlier, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is set to release in the United States on June 4th, 2021 with a month-long simultaneous release on HBO Max on the same date. Now, if you guys feel a bit nostalgic as well as curious, you can go ahead and stream ‘Seven’ on Netflix to witness what inspired the story telling of the upcoming horror extravaganza by Michael Chaves.
