What’s Love Got To Do With It: Shekhar Kapur’s New Cross-Cultural Film

Stellar director Shekhar Kapur is one of the few Indian filmmakers to have made their mark in the British film industry. His films ‘Elizabeth’ and ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age‘ have both won Academy Awards in different categories. Now comes news that the director is working on a new British film from production companies Studiocanal and Working Title. Titled ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’, the film is a cross-cultural romantic comedy, with an eclectic star cast.

Actress Lily James (Cinderella, Rebecca, Baby Driver) is playing the lead in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It’. Shazad Latif (Star Trek: Discovery) is playing the lead opposite Lily James. James plays a girl who’s unlucky in love, while Latif plays her Pakistani friend who is willing to settle for an arranged marriage. Oscar winner Emma Thompson plays the mother of James’ character.

Interestingly, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ has a strong Asian star presence. Veteran Indian actress Shabana Azmi has a prominent role in the film. For those who don’t know, Shekhar Kapur had directed Shabana Azmi in his debut directorial film, ‘Masoom’. Joining Azmi in the film is rising Pakistani star Sajal Aly. Indian viewers might know Sajal Aly from her ZEE5 show, ‘Dhoop Ki Deewar’. Lastly, Pakistani musical maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has composed a song for the film. He also has an acting part in ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has composed and performed numerous hit Bollywood songs too.

Jemima Khan, former wife of Pakistani PM Imran Khan, is co-producing the film via her banner, Instinct Productions.
