Stree 2 is the blockbuster that Bollywood needed. The Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao horror-comedy managed to gross ₹118 crore, with ₹100.1 crore coming from the Indian subcontinent alone. As for the opening, it reportedly brought in ₹76.5 crore, but this raises a question:
How accurate is that number?
While the official studio reports claim an opening of over ₹75 crore, some calculations suggest otherwise. The Wednesday previews resulted in ₹8 crore to ₹10 crore, and the 15th August collections are estimated to be around ₹54 crore to ₹56 crore. This makes it a bit far from the reported ₹76.5 crore figure.
This discrepancy might be due to the fact that some sources state the ₹76 crore estimation includes single-screen numbers, which other estimates might not have accounted for. However, there’s a comparison to be made with Jawan.
The Shah Rukh Khan-led action film grossed ₹65.5 crore on its opening day without any previews. It remains unclear whether this figure includes single-screen earnings.
Stree 2 is a phenomenal film that deserves to reach astronomical numbers, but the main doubt surrounding the figures is that Jawan had far bigger hype. Just in terms of pre-release bookings, Jawan had 16.53 lakh, which is almost 7 lakh more than Stree 2.
So, when the makers claim it’s the highest-grossing opening ever in India, it’s worth questioning. This isn’t about degrading Stree 2—it’s probably a better quality film—but SRK’s fanbase is unreal, and that alone is the best form of advertisement.
But whatever the truth behind the numbers are, the second day it just had a drop of 40% which is a phenomenal deal for the film. Saturday and Sunday will also result in big boost in the numbers.
In the end, We’re not calling the studio dishonest, but it’s just that these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt.
