But what does the future hold for crossover films? Will we see more of Godzilla vs. Kong?
“Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” is the fifth installment in the MonsterVerse, with no sequel or spin-off confirmed yet. Director Adam Wingard anticipates Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures waiting to gauge the film’s performance before deciding on future projects.
In an interview, Wingard expressed his readiness for a potential Wingard MonsterVerse trilogy, indicating that he already has plans in mind, although nothing official has been announced.
“The whole idea is that if you’ve done two movies, like, maybe you should just go ahead and do a third because, as you said, there’s a trilogy in there. I definitely think there’s more story to this, and I think that I have more story to tell. But it just depends on how [Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire] does and how things shape out. I know that sounds like a diplomatic answer (laughs).”
“But the truth is, if I’m going to be completely honest with you, I do have more story to tell with these monsters, and I know where I’d go with it. I would be very excited to be able to come back for another one if things worked out!”
This is a practical approach by the director, especially considering that a strong box office performance could pave the way for additional titles in the franchise.
