Star Original series ‘Oussekine’ is finally available to stream for Indian audiences. For the uninitiated, Star is a part of OTT giant Disney Plus that streams adult content for mature subscribers of the platform. Disney Plus does not have Star as a separate tab in India, because it has Hotstar to stream content not suitable for children. ‘Oussekine’ is now streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar since this morning; and believe us when we tell you, it’s a mustwatch. The series is shocking, to say the least, and thrilling, in equal measures.
‘Oussekine‘ is a 4-part series that recounts the horrific killing of 22-year old Malik Oussekine at the hands of the French police. On the night of 5 December 1986, 22-year-old French-Algerian student Malik Oussekine was chased and beaten to death by police at a protest against the then French government’s anti-immigrants policies. ‘Oussekine’ details the struggle of the immigrant Oussekine family in bringing their son’s killing into the public eye and getting justice for him.
The series does not linger merely on the tragic death of Malik Oussekine. It touches upon the 1962 Paris massacre of innocent Algerians by France, the Front Nationale’s 1980s protests, and more. Sayyid El Alami (Netflix’s Messiah) plays Malik in ‘Oussekine’, while Hiam Abbas (Succession) plays his mother Aicha. ‘Oussekine’ is created like a thriller, with the proceedings on screen giving no breathing space to the viewer.
Another compelling fact regarding ‘Oussekine’ is that it is created and directed by Antoine Chevrollier, the director of the terrific French spy and political series, ‘The Bureau’ (called Le Bureau des Légendes in French).
