Similar to other major tournaments around the world like the Euros 2020, Indian Premier League and the NBA among others, the 2020 Summer Olympics, which take place in Japan, too got postponed to a 2021 release date, thanks to the Coronavirus Pandemic. The global event will take place for two weeks between the months of July and August.
Although the Tokyo Olympics has been facing scandals left and right, be it for the bribery allegations, sexist comments or logo plagiarism – the JOC, Japanese Olympic Committee is committed to the opening of the Olympic games by this year itself. There have been loads of stadiums built, including Japan’s new National Stadium, where the main opening event is likely to take place.
With the recent announcement that International spectators will be banned from attending the Tokyo Olympics, it has become even more necessary to have a subscription with SonyLIV to watch the sporting events live. Although nearly 600,000 Olympic tickets and another 300,000 Paralympic tickets have been purchased by overseas residents, it makes sense that this Olympics will bar the International non-participants from banning.
According to many medical experts, the Olympics could become a Global Super-event, where the Covid-19 virus could come to the International competition, spread among other participants and then the athletes will spread the virus on their own. And this is not even considering the (nearly a million) barred International audience. With this in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Tokyo Summer Olympics gets cancelled again, for good this time.
For now, the games will still officially commence, starting on July 23rd 2021 till 8th August 2021. There will be 339 events in 33 different sports (50 disciplines in total), with over 11,091 athletes expected to feature from over 206 nations. Stream this major global event on SonyLIV in India.
