After the lockdown, so many OTT platforms were introduced in the Malayalam industry. But not many of them stand stout now. There were a total of twelve streaming platforms that were launched at the time and even after that, OTT platforms were introduced. Suraj Surya, a Malayalam filmmaker introduced another platform named 4K Plus Movies, which is the latest entry.
Charles George, an OTT consultant from Kerala has said,“Roots, Neestream, Koode, HRlive, Cave, Prime Reels, and Sainaplay were some of the OTT players launched in Kerala post-pandemic. However, only Sainaplay and HRlive among them could survive.”
The Malayalam film industry has no lack of quality content, and it is finding new audiences everyday in India. There is little doubt and debate that Kerala is producing the best stories in the country right now. What then could be the reason behind this gigantic failure?
These little platforms are struggling hard against giants like Netflix, Disney+Hotstar, Zee5 and more. The success of OTT platforms depends very much on the understanding of the audiences and the demand and supply chain. Without an abundant supply of good content, there are more OTT platforms launched day by day, there will be no other result than failure. Malayalam industry brings in good projects, but so many OTT platforms for a regional film industry are in no way justifiable and practical.
