Superstar Mohanlal’s Drishyam has been a blockbuster success globally since it’s release in 2013. Such was the impact of the movie that it was remade in Hindi by Nishikant Kamat which starred Ajay Devgan in the lead role. The Jeethu Joseph directorial has become a cult classic movie in India and is counter among the finest mystery thrillers from Indian cinema.
Seeing the response the movie has gotten over the years, the makers decided to bring a sequel of the much loved thriller. And no surprise here, the news broke out like a wildfire. Every avid fan of the flick was excited so as to seeing what lies more for Georgekutty and his family. But the fans were left disappointed when it was announced that the movie will be arriving on OTT platformrather than on theatres. Yes, Drishyam 2 will be arriving on Amazon Prime Video in the last week of January or the first week of February.
While there was a huge outbursts from netizens who were clearly upset over the direct to OTT release, the makers too weren’t sure about a theatrical release. Due to the ongoing pandemic the theatres are not allowed to hold more than 50% capacity. And with the COVID-19 scare still at large, it is evident that the Drishyam 2 would have not enjoyed high footfalls. Despite all this, the makers are delighted that the movie will be coming to Amazon Prime Video and will be available to everyone at the same time.
Since Drishyam enjoys a large following, it is safe to assume that it’s sequel will be getting huge response regardless of the platform it arrives. Also the fact that it is a family entertainer, the movie will be cherished by everyone in the family together. Also the excitement to watch a mystery thriller with a bunch of people together is matched by none.
The makers clarified the fact that Drishyam 2 is a small budgeted flick and thus they’ll not be facing any losses without theatrical release but are still sad for the audience who will not be able to enjoy the atmosphere the movie will be creating in theatres.
