In many of our articles, you might have read that we complain about OTT becoming stale. We rightly stand by our opinion as we do not get many experimental projects as we used to during 2019 or 2020.
Let’s go back 4 years to understand what happened. The world was under lockdown and the most entertaining source of entertainment was only OTT. People switched to it and the number of people buying subscriptions to OTT platforms suddenly skyrocketed.
As an after-effect, OTT platforms became happy and started investing in multiple projects. However, as soon as COVID got over and people got busy with office jobs, schools and colleges, there was a steep decline in the number of people subscribing to OTT platforms. This decline was too steep and it affected the kind of content we see on OTT. What was initially experimental suddenly became formulaic. We started seeing stale stories with no fun and this is one of the biggest reasons OTT just doesn’t look as fun as it used to be. Revered filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shed some light on the decline of OTT.
He stated, “I think we are past the golden time of OTT. Now OTT is starting to turn into TV. Long format storytelling has always had potential but now it is not dictated by quality, it is dictated by algorithm. And that’s where the problem is.”
What do you think about it?
