The hype for Korean dramas in India is unmatched now. India is one of the biggest markets for K-drama, and Netflix is the one destination where you can find most of them. The popularity of Netflix India depends greatly on the dramas that it produces. The success of ‘Squid Game’ and ‘All Of Us Are Dead’ are almost historical.
But the audiences are not happy with Netflix India recently. There is a clear gap between demand and production. Indian audiences want the shows to be dubbed in Hindi, a language they are comfortable in. But Netflix is rarely paying any heed to what they want. Watching the shows in its original language with subtitles is definitely reasonable, but not many of the subcontinent manage to do that.
Dramas are meant for entertainment and they have to be comfortable with the language of their target audience. A majority of the viewers would not watch them if the shows are available in their language. The popularity would not matter much here. This is the reason Disney+Hotstar is so serious about titles in multiple audios.
People are not able to watch shows like ‘Alchemy of Souls’ and ‘Hometown Cha Cha Cha’ because of the same reason. Those shows are the most sought after dubs. Long time has passed and almost everyday there are complaints about people wanting them dubbed.
If Netflix India has to revive the success ratio of Korean Dramas in India as it happened with ‘It’s Okay To Not Be Okay’, ‘Itaewon Class’ or the dark fantasy ‘Hellbound’ ; it has to dub more shows to Hindi. The audience is so huge, that such inconsideration about the comforts of them is not at all commendable.
