One thing for which Netflix India is constantly called out is their inability to grab global success. Even Binged has pointed out several times that the original series failed to create a global sensation. The world is evolving and one thing we can see is acceptance.
A few years back it was unimaginable that a Korean series such as Squid Game would become the most successful series ever on Netflix. Its record is still unbeatable and more than success we should look at hope. A hope that a non-English show from Asia can create havoc across the Entertainment space is something to celebrate.
But where does the Indian entertainment industry stand in this? We must acknowledge films like RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi that became global sensations. But let’s be honest, the global reception of these films may look new but it is not.
Hindi films like Awaara, Shree 420, and more were extremely successful globally. In countries like the USSR and Turkey, Hindi films were cultural ambassadors. So, films like RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi are mere resurrections instead of the nativity of a new era.
But with digital space evolving, series is as important as films if not more. Audiences tend to create a cult for series more than they do for a film.
Netflix gave Korean entertainment space a cult but Indian series are not accepted well within India let alone the world.
When asked about the same Netflix India’s Vice President Monika Shergill, stated,
“Why is everyone looking for India’s Squid Game? It traveled because it was such a unique idea and had so many things coming together. I want to ask everybody – bring an idea that can be our Squid Game.
This is not on Netflix. It is on the creators to come up with an idea that can appeal to local audiences and become a breakout. Having said that, I want everybody to dial down the pressure and not be in a stupid rat race.
If you are trending in your home country and doing well for your audiences there, you will start getting recommended across the globe to whoever is enjoying that genre of content.”
But there is a problem. This is a very politically correct answer that is failing to bring any result. Sadly, international reception matters for Indians more than quality. The interesting and recent reception of “The Elephant Whisperers” is a great example of the same.
Netflix must take the responsibility of creating great content because that is what they promise to the audience.
