In case you guys did not already know, Sex and the City is returning for a reboot series titled And Just Like That… which will feature 10 half-hour episodes. The series is set to start production in late Spring 2021 and pretty much the entire cast will be returning to the series …except for fan favourite Samantha Jones who is portrayed by Kim Cattrall.
Sex and the City has four main characters which are portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Cattrall. The first three mentioned are good friends with each other, but Cattrall has never been part of their “group”, according to the British-born Canadian actor. There has also been rumors of a feud over the years between Cattral and Jessica Parker over the years and with an apparent “toxic relationship” with her co-stars, there was little-to-no chance for a Sex and the City 3 (third movie in the film franchise), let alone a reunion/ reboot series.
Sex and the City was a series which released back in 1998 and it followed four women who despite their differences and varying life styles, stuck together through the ups and downs in their respective and collective lives. The four best friends are brilliant and unique and they are all based in New York. This series was lauded for its tackling of various subject matters at the time which talked openly about women’s sexuality, sexual activities, safe sex, femininity, among other “taboo”/ “sensitive” topics.
The main character of the show is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw. We see the series mainly from her unique point of view as a columnist for the fictional New York Star. Kristin Davis’s Charlotte York and Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda Hobbes are two other brilliant characters we can relate to – one being a hopeless romantic, while the other being career driven. But the one who, nearly everyone loved and wanted (aspired) to be was Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones.
The portrayal of Samantha Jones is not just a brilliantly written ode to women everywhere, but she is also a character that needs to be mentioned alongside the names of Barney Stinson and Joey Tribbiani. Just like the aforementioned two men, Samantha is a very sexually active woman who is outspoken and confident. And this character felt like it was made for Cattrall (or atleast, that’s how good her portrayal was of Samantha) and the fact that she will not be returning will be a sour note for many die-hard Sex and the City fans.
