Why Vijay Sethupathi’s ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ Is The Perfect Big-Screen Entertainer

Tughlaq Durbar

The trailer of much-awaited Vijay Sethupathi starrer ‘Tughlaq Durbar‘ dropped earlier this morning and we wish it was scheduled for a theatrical release. The film will instead have a television premiere on Sun TV on 10th September, post which it will available for streaming on Netflix. Helmed by debutant director Delhi Prasad Deenadayal, this political satire also stars Raashi Khanna, Manjima Mohan and Parthiban in pivotal roles.

Just yesterday, we heard that Sethupathi’s rural drama ‘Kadaisi Vivasayi’ is to release in theatres, which we think may not prove to be a smart move considering the film is a serious, non-entertainer and would have been better off releasing digitally. On the contrary, ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ should have surely been the film to get a theatrical release. From the trailer, the film seems to be an out-and-out masala, entertainer and definitely needed to have been watched on the big screen. The political comedy not only has Sethupathi’s star power, but also a theme that masses would typically love to see on the big screen.

A movie experience is all about larger than life characters, heart-thumping dialogues and powerful music – and this film has all that and more packed in! Whether its Sethupathi’s antics or energetic hook-steps, his power-packed dialogue delivery or the truly ‘seetimaar’ dialogues itself, this film would have proven to be the perfect theatre reviver. The trailer gives a sneak peak into the current state of the city’s political affairs, with Sethupathi shown as the city-cleanser in a world of power-hungry politicians. As though Sethupathi and Parthiban weren’t enough to mock politicians, the comic angle brought in by veteran actor Sathyaraj is outstanding.

With the responsibility of reviving theatres mainly falling upon superstars and big-ticket releases, ‘Tughlaq Durbar‘ could have easily done the numbers and brought audiences back to theatres. It is indeed a huge loss to theatre owners, who could have really benefited from this film, especially within the first month of reopening. Although Sethupathi’s ‘Laabam’ is set to solve the same purpose, releasing theatrically on the 9th of September, the the makers of this film too, should have waited it out for a big-screen release.
