When ‘Daredevil’ ended back in late October 2018, I actually breathed a sigh of relief. I didn’t watch the third season because after viewing the much anticipated (and disastrous) Marvel TV teamup, ‘The Defenders’, I wasn’t in a hurry to go back and watch a series (and a hero) that I was slowly starting to fall out of love with. Still, eventually I watched the series, almost a year later and I realised my mistake.
You see, before the third season for ‘Daredevil’ was going to come out, the fallout for ‘The Defenders’ was bad. So bad, that they cancelled all individual shows – Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist (this series was already critically panned to begin with, which also pushed all other cancellations) and ofcourse Daredevil, and even the Daredevil spin-off, ‘The Punisher’. And with the character Daredevil had supposedly died in the end of ‘The Defenders’, I wasn’t looking forward to the possible dumb way he was going to get brought back to life and his final fight against “The Kingpin” (I regret this last one). I mean “The Kingpin” fight ending is obvious, he was the only main villain left in the series and I felt that Matt Murdock was gonna angst himself for at least 10 episodes while kicking some ass into the finale. At least that was what I thought.
Eventually I saw the third season. And literally 3 episodes in, I knew I was wrong not to watch the series as soon as it had dropped. Because season 3 of ‘Daredevil’, in my personal opinion, is the best season of ‘Daredevil’; probably even the best season of any Superhero live-action series released by Marvel and/or DC combined (Obviously ‘The Boys’ is from neither, so readers put down the pitchforks). Okay I’ll admit, sentiment played a not-so-small role in this “ranking”, especially when I realised halfway through watching that this was the last time I would see Daredevil on-screen (atleast, the Charlie Cox version).
Season 3 made me go back to watch the entire ‘Daredevil’ series again. I even went back and watched ‘The Defenders’ and I can’t believe I am saying this, it wasn’t all THAT bad. I mainly started watching ‘Daredevil’ because I love the comic book hero and the movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner did NOT give the character justice. But the third reminded me why I loved Daredevil as a character in the first place and the entire series was brilliant.
At the end of the rewatch, I understood that I had made peace with it (‘Daredevil’ ending). We got one brilliant (sorry for overusing this word), emotionally gripping, tightly packed, amazing TV series. Karen’s backstory and the ending three-way fight sequence stood out and were excellent additions to the series that helped me move on. Nearly every character got an arc and (it) reached full circle. I realised that I was glad that ‘Daredevil’, even though the hero only got three seasons, ended. The show was brilliant and the ending was perfect. Anything done on top of that would probably just ruin it. Or at least that is what I feel .
So bringing back ‘Daredevil’ is almost unnecessary to me. Of course, this is not a popular opinion and with the rumors and petitions coming out about ‘Daredevil’, I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel (or Disney) decides to bring “DD” back; but to all the petitioners out there – don’t be surprised if the series ends up like ‘Game of Thrones’. I just hope there is both continuity as well as a respectable script backing the “Devil of Hell’s Kitchen”, if he ever returns to the small screen (or makes an appearance in the big one).
