Leading OTT Major, Netflix has been struggling to make inroads into the Regional Cinema in India. However, the OTT platform is to be blamed majorly for that. It is evident from the way it has airdropped the Telugu film, Wild Dog starring Nagarjuna last night.
Wild Dog has got decent reviews at the box office but still underperformed. Irrespective of the box office performance, there has been good interest in the film in the OTT space for obvious reasons. In such a scenario, the release has to be planned in a way it reaches the most audience.
But then, the release announcement has come few hours before the actual release and the movie is out on Netflix even before people barely know. Furthermore, there has been confusion if the movie’s Telugu version will release until the last minute. Only the Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi versions were shown in the Coming Soon category of the platform. The OTT Major would not confirm the Telugu release until it is finally out at the stroke of midnight. This kind of improper planning has been costing Netflix in the Regional markets while the other OTT platforms like Amazon Prime Video are bombarding the advertisements of their new releases everywhere much in advance.
