Will Ali Abbas Zafar’s Return To YRF Turn Around His Fortune

Ali Abbas Zafar began his directorial journey with Yash Raj Films and gave back to back box office blockbusters until he decided to try new routes but that didn’t turn out that well for him. While he may have gained critical acclaim from certain quarters for the later projects it was far from the success he saw under YRF.

Now after 7 long years, Zafar is returning to his mentor Chopra’s Yash Raj Films banner and expecting superhits from this collaboration wouldn’t be asking for too much. The cinemattic expertise of YRF and the creative mind of Zafar can together create something legendary and also bring back the era of Bollywood mass pullers.

As per the latest update, Zafar will collaborate with YRF and direct multiple original theatrical projects.

Zafar started as an assistant director with YRF and worked on projects like ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’, ‘Tashan’, New York’, ‘and Badmaash Company’. His directorial journey began with YRF’s ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ (2011) which was followed by films like ‘Gunday’ (2014), ‘Sultan’ (2016), and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ (2017). All his directorial venture with YRF were massive hits and made good collections at the box office.

The success streak continued with ‘Bharat’ (2019) but post that he has gradually been going downhill. His next project was his web series debut ‘Tandav’ (Prime Video) that got caught up in controversies and could not impress the viewers. Impacted by the lockdown his next films ‘Jogi’ (Netflix) and ‘Bloody Daddy’ (Jio Cinema) also premiered on OTT. While the former received mostly positive reviews with praises for direction, screenplay, performances and more, the latter got mixed response. Then came his next big screen release ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ earlier this year and it proved to be a total disaster.

If all goes good, this reunion wouldn’t just be great for Zafar and Yash Raj Films but will also be amazing for Hindi film industry. Moreover, if these projects go beyond sequels and adaptations or remakes, which they must as the announcement claims them to be “original” theatrical projects, it would also help the industry prove its creative abilities. It’s now a matter of wait and watch and see what they have in store for all the movie buffs.
