The matinee idol of West Bengal Uttam Kumar was invincible at the box office. But his only flop came when he tried to replace Birendra Krishna Bhadra in the popular ‘Mohishasur Mordini’ program. Bengalis are too sensitive about things like ‘Mohishasur Mordini’. And they will not like any distortion with what they have once liked.
Hoichoi is coming with their own version of ‘Mohishasur Mordini’ this time and they will either create history or fail miserably. This is the first time that the much popular programme is being brought to OTT. Audiences are already accustomed to the shift towards TV from the most popular Radio version. The Radio program still holds much superiority and the majority of audiences prefer that only. But a huge number of Bengalis have shifted outside Bengal and even India and they find it difficult to match the timing of the program and experience the surreal and nostalgic Mahalaya. They will find it much easier this time with Hoichoi.
Hoichoi’s Mahalaya is made as a series and there will be a few episodes to watch anytime one wants. This breaks away with the timing limitation but another question arises at the same time. Mahalaya is not just any program, and making it as a series to monetise every emotional moment for Bengalis might not work out well for the biggest OTT platform of the language. If they take too much creative liberty too, there is a chance of failure there. We will get to know that on the 2nd of October when Mohishasur Mordini comes out on Hoichoi.
