Will Disney+ Adapt The TV Format In The Future?

Irony or farce, something along these lines, as Disney might return to the place where it started its own journey. Now, they are planning to revert to the retro channel formats, and that too within their Disney+ app.

How do they want the channels to function?

Just like the television era, Disney wants their channels to be always-on, similar to linear cable, and might stream content such as Marvel or Star Wars. Now, what will be the most viable way to execute this?

Disney is already executing the Advertisement-supported plan in their streaming services, and with a cheaper price tag, that is destined to be popular among the fans. But as they are making a shift in their strategy, their channel system might come with a different plan.

Firstly, with channels, they can make it free and advertising-supported for the fans. Marvel’s older content can easily be streamed for free as most people have already seen it, and if they incorporate advertisements, it is like free money for them. But, the fans will be trading their power of choice for this free streaming option, taking away the very essence of OTT.

It is being reported that Disney is making this shift to retain the attention of the users. Especially with channels like these, people don’t have to go through the dilemma of what to stream.

This aligns with its strategy to integrate Hulu content and tap into the rising trend of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST). Recent data suggests platforms like Tubi are gaining traction over competitors like Peacock and Paramount Plus, highlighting the appeal of casually tuning in to shows without the need for intense focus.
