No, it’s not the Spider-Man and the Loki series or the new Avengers films that will reshape the franchise. I’m not saying that they aren’t good; they have the perfect amount of excitement, like a well-prepared dish. However, at times, they can be too predictable and too gentle.
But shows like Punisher, Daredevil, or even the newest addition to the lineup, Maya, might change the direction of the ongoing content.
It’s not like their shows haven’t been really brutal; they have been. Take a show like Moon Knight, for example. It had great action and hand-to-hand combat, but there’s one thing that might make you turn your head, and that is the lack of blood.
Even WandaVision had a similar problem. It was supposed to be more violent, and imagine if they would have shown some form of brutality; how menacing would Wanda really look? Even a series like Hawkeye had a similar set of problems. The action scenes are good on paper, but they don’t look as devastating as they should.
But the earlier Marvel days were indeed good when they partnered up with Netflix. They produced TV series like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Jessica Jones, and they were not afraid to keep it mature, sometimes going all out.
Blood, guts, and everything you can imagine, Punisher and Daredevil had it all. But as the MCU shifted from the gritty, dark tone to the colorful world of Disney, the entire style shifted.
As Moon Knight saw the daylight, some made speculations that it would be a bloodbath, but Moon Knight indeed suffered from the Disney syndrome. Things are different now, as Disney has acquired Hulu and is moving forward with a different approach.
The trailer of Echo showcased blood. It also featured someone getting shot in the head.
The 10th MCU series will also be released on both Disney+ and Hulu, giving them the luxury to be a bit less Disney-esque. This won’t be the first time any Marvel content will be streaming on Hulu; Helstrom and Runaways have graced the world of Hulu previously.
Now, in terms of brutality, Echo won’t be the only one standing. Ironically, Maya, aka Echo, was a side character in the comics, sometimes intertwined with Daredevil. Onscreen, Echo will definitely test the waters for Daredevil.
If the trailer featured this much blood, rage, and brutality, it can be speculated that the series will offer even more intensity, reminiscent of the old Netflix days. And if things go well, Daredevil will undoubtedly take it up a notch, and fans will be able to witness the ‘true’ marvel of Marvel.
