For all of those who are not familiar with the term ‘Mockumentary’, it is a show or series that is created in the format of a documentary but is a satirical or comical take on serious situations and incidents. Death to 2020 was one of Netflix’s latest projects which could be called a mockumentary. It had some of the most notable names like Lisa Kudrow and Samuel L Jackson in it.
While it garnered a lot of praise and many praised it for its hard-hitting tone one has to wonder whether there would ever be such a title produced solely catering to the Indian audiences. Many series have come under the radar and Tandav was even forced to cut out some scenes due to the highly sensitive topic that it tackles in the series.
All the OTT platforms in India have now come under the regulation of the I&B Ministry and the viewers are scared that stringent regulation rules will be applied to simply cut out anything that is not pleasing to the masses.
Mockumentaries are a direct hit at things and the people who are in power or controlling them and that again could be a highly sensitive topic. Considering the uproar that was caused by different series OTT platforms may take it upon themselves to self-censor some of the topics that could cause a massive backlash.
Sarcasm is always thought of as a way to spread a bit of laughter while trying to highlight loopholes in important issues but this doesn’t always sit right with the masses and one Is forced to think whether such a concept or title would ever be created in India.
