Will Indian OTT Sharks Let This New Gen OTT Survive?

A new OTT platform called Chull has just stepped into the Indian market. It’s backed by a U.S.-based company, Flickfusion Media Inc., and it promises to bring something fresh to the table. But the big question is, can it survive in a space already crowded with giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hotstar?

Chull is trying to stand out by focusing on regional stories. It’s not just sticking to Hindi; it also wants to stream content in Tamil, Telugu, Bangla, and more. That’s a smart move because India loves its local languages. Plus, they’re aiming to bring bold and emotional stories that people can truly connect with.

Several similar platforms have emerged with regional content as their USP. For instance, Planet Marathi OTT has carved a niche with exclusive Marathi films and shows, and Aha has found considerable success with Telugu and Tamil content, gaining millions of subscribers. However, these platforms are often limited by regional boundaries and slower expansion strategies.

Where Chull appears to have an edge is in its tech-first, global approach. Unlike regional platforms that started local and expanded slowly, Chull is clearly positioning itself not just as a regional content hub, but as a next-gen global storytelling platform. This gives it the potential to tap into the Tier-2/3 Indian markets.

Another interesting thing is their pricing. At just ₹79 a week or ₹579 a year, it’s quite affordable compared to other platforms. This flexibility can help them attract first-time OTT users and younger audiences.

But even with all this, Chull has a tough road ahead. The Indian OTT space is highly competitive. Big players already have deep pockets, popular shows, and loyal viewers. To survive, Chull will need to keep bringing fresh, high-quality content and not just rely on being the “new kid on the block.”

At the end of the day, if Chull can deliver on its promise and really connect with local and global audiences through bold, regional storytelling, it might just find a place for itself. Otherwise, the OTT sharks may not leave much room to breathe. Let’s wait and watch.
