Will Francis Ford Coppola recreate his Cannes history with Megalopolis that he did forty five years ago with ‘Apocalypse Now’. Megalopolis has failed to earn any distributors even now in the United States. France played the savior this time as well and the country was the first to offer a distributor for the film and other European countries like Germany, Italy, Spain and UK followed.
Megalopolis is the dream project for Coppola and it is strange that American producers have tagged it as ‘not so commercial’ and ‘too experimental for theaters’. This sounds like blasphemy on the side of producers and distributors and fans hope the the 2024 Cannes Film Festival will come with a solution to the problem.
There was much problem while funding the distribution of ‘Apocalypse Now’ as well and Coppola went bankrupt for it, but it turned out to be a huge success with rave reviews from critics and audiences.
Some lucky early viewers of the movie have said that Coppola is “actively fucking with a risk-averse industry” and “tearing down the modern temple of Hollywood.” but this experiment is surely costing a lot on him. Some independent distributors have seen the movie and decided that the movie only has chances at the Oscars in the technical departments and not in the major categories. They also fear that the filmmaker will be an overly demanding partner. Still, there are chances that the film might be picked up by some awards inclined company. And A24 is one of the most probable names. Coppola is mostly interested in a domestic distributor to buy the rights.
