A lot of major Hollywood movies along with some low budget Bollywood and regional films got released earlier during the lockdown in digital format; which was received warmly by the online audience. This gave courage to other small films and low budget films to release on OTTs. With the recent successes of Dil Bechara and CU Soon, which featured movie stars in low to medium budget movies, this was a sign saying that any big-budget film featuring superstars can also make money from digital releases.
V, Soorarai Pottru and Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare are few of the above-mentioned big-budget films coming out this month on digital platforms, which contain super stars. With loyal fan-bases and good scripts backing these films, they are expected to be sure-fire hits. And if they do become hits, they will give even more confidence for the truly big budget films containing regional megastars, like Master and One to release on digital platforms.
Of course, nothing is set in stone when it comes to these movies as their filmmakers still want it to be released theatrically. But with the Central government still not allowing theaters halls to open, it would be better to release these films digitally for an already awaiting public. The longer a film stays collecting dust somewhere, the higher the chance it has in getting pirated, or losing it’s relevance.
Big budget films can always do what Disney+ did with Mulan and release it on OTTs with a separate pay-per-view format for the film for a couple of months after it launches. With superstars like Mammooty and Vijay who have an avid following, acting in these films, they are sure to get a massive response from online subscribers, even through this format or through VoDs.
