Pink, during the time of its release in Hindi, was a pathbreaking film in many ways for an industry that has more or less nurtured patriarchal ideas since times immemorial. It helped people understand the idea of consent, regardless of gender and ‘no means no’ for an answer. Faces like Taapsee Pannu, Amitabh Bachchan had enabled the relevant subject with the right kind of reach for a pan-Indian audience.
The Tamil remake, Nerkonda Paarvai, was a bigger surprise, starring Ajith Kumar in the lead role, given the star power he had commanded. Though it’ll be too much to say that the film ushered in a change among the public, it put forth an important thought.
It’s important to note that both these films ever since their release on OTT platforms like Hotstar, Netflix and ZEE5 have received greater love from audiences sans barriers of country, language, thanks to its universal subject. Because of the widespread reach both the films have had on the digital space, the scope of the future remakes of Pink feels limited, especially when we discuss the launch of the Telugu version starring Pawan Kalyan.
One must remember that the Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy titled Adithya Varma, opened to a lukewarm response too, especially after the Telugu and Hindi versions did very well at the box office and the digital platforms. And it’s also a fact that Dhruv Vikram couldn’t match up to the standards already set sky-high by the likes of Vijay Deverakonda and Shahid Kapoor.
So, will a film like Pink, that did exceedingly well at the box office in the Telugu states, cast a spell with its Telugu remake too? It all boils down to the apt regional references and intensity that the new lead cast including Pawan Kalyan could bring into their performances. An adaptation of the courtroom drama would certainly be more interesting than a frame-to-frame remake.
