“Shōgun” is now synonymous with greatness; the immense hype it is creating down the line is absolutely phenomenal. With three episodes streaming right now, the show is receiving love left, right, and center. From critical reviews that renounce its greatness to fans who are worshiping it on a pedestal, “Shōgun” might sadden the fans with a recent update.
Talking about the rating scales, it is unparalleled, with 9.3 on IMDb and 99% on Rotten Tomatoes; “Shōgun” is definitely the talk of the town. And it’s not just about the ratings either, as “Shōgun” pulled off astronomical numbers, giving Disney its biggest hit to date.
But despite all this success, “Shōgun” might not get a second season. Or let me rephrase it: the makers are almost clear about ending the journey after the first season itself.
During an interview with the creators, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo clarified that they are quite happy with the first season and might not even go for a second one for that matter.
They were asked if Marks and Kondo wanted to build upon the first season and what their plans and hopes are for the second season. Marks stated:
“We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence. We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place. And I’ve been party to this in the past with shows like this, where you build a whole factory, and it only pumps out 10 cars and closes up shop. It’s a bummer.”
Later, Marks suggests that the lack of a second season for their show isn’t definite, likening it to not wanting another child immediately. He attributes the delay in decision-making to the long postproduction process and clarifies that they’d already be shooting season two if it were a typical TV series.
Now, is it sad that Shōgun won’t be investing in another season? It is, but there is one strong positive side as well, at least the makers know when to stop and this will make them avoid a fate which was suffered by GOT.
