Netflix recently dropped the trailer for its much awaited film starring Dhanush, “Jagame Thandhiram”. Ever since it dropped, the movie has been creating buzz and why won’t it? The movie has been highly awaited by fans and lovers of cinema for a long time. Jagame Thandhiram is set for a June 18th release on the streaming platform and the hype the movie is getting already is unbelievable. Jagame Thandhiram is one such movie that was supposed to go theatres, but was later moved to direct to OTT release.
The direct-to-OTT release was frowned upon when the makers announced it back in the beginning of the year. This wasn’t even supported by the movie’s star, Dhanush himself. But with time, people got used to the idea that movies will actually be released on Netflix and not theatres. But it didn’t stop there. Fans have been constantly trending Jagame Thandhiram, since there were no updates, as to when the movie will drop. But, now it looks like Netflix really had a cool plan in mind announcing it much later than expected.
Many expected it might come in March, but that went by. Some even claimed that it would be coming out in April, but even that didn’t happen until very recently when Netflix finally announced the movie will be coming out on June 18th. By this time, all the other platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar and ZEE5 scored some of the biggest movies and were coming out with release dates and some others even released a few. “Radhe” being one such movie that was released on ZEE5, which ended up being a huge success for the platform.
Amazon Prime on the other hand were releasing movies like Mumbai Saga, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, Saina and even got the rights for Farhan Akhtar’s Toofan, Vidya Balan’s Sherni and the upcoming Emraan Hashmi thriller “Ezra”. Amazon was scoring really high with the regionals too as it released Drishyam 2, Karnan, Kala, Joji, The Priest, Ek Mini Katha and others.
Hotstar too wasn’t far behind as the streaming platform recently added a bunch of upcoming Bollywood movies to be streamed directly on the platform. Movies like Bhoot Police, Shiddat, Hungama 2, Mimi and Shaadistan will be released on Disney+ Hotstar. Seeing all these, many had questions as to what was Netflix doing, why was it not getting into any Bollywood movies?
Well, to answer that, Netflix well before all these secured a good Bollywood line up with movies like Haseen Dillruba, Dhamaka, Sardar Ka Grandson to name a few. Roohi too entered Netflix few weeks after its theatrical release. But Netflix’s main MVP has to be “Jagame Thandhiram”. This movie has the potential to break all sorts of records as this has been the talk of the town for a long, long time.
Jagame Thandhiram definitely isn’t a Bollywood movie but the capacity and the reach the movie has already is mind boggling. The movie is not only releasing in Tamil but also is releasing Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi. Netflix will be releasing the movie in 190 countries, which definitely extends its reach to an unprecedented level and also, it being a Dhanush starrer, the movie has got an extra ace to it.
So, with all the announcements from different streaming platforms about their list of movies releasing, Netflix surpassed everyone with just one announcement of Jagame Thandhiram. Now, we can definitely say with this particular movie Netflix kept the best for last. Also, not to forget this is just the first half of the year, Netflix for sure has some big guns in store for the second half of the year.
