Recently in the lockdown period we’ve witnessed tons of content which left a mark in the industry. Particularly due to the advent of the OTT platforms which received a huge boost in their viewership newer style of content is being received well. And the one genre which has done extremely well on OTTs in such a short period of time is the anthology styled content. But it seems that the new found love for anthologies might only be suitable for OTT platforms instead of big screen theatres. The recently released Kutty Story is the biggest example of that.
Kutty Story is the recently released Tamil anthology movie which is directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, AL Vijay, Venkat Prabhu and Nalan Kumaraswamy. Each director has directed four different stories in the movie. Initially planned as an OTT release, Kutty Story decided to let go off the streaming trend and tried it’s luck in theatres. But the response from the audience it seems is a little underwhelming despite having some big names.
There has been a mixed reception from the critics as well as the audience regarding the movie. Some found the movie extremely interesting while some claimed it to be a letdown. Seeing its reception it bounds one to think that are Anthologies suitable for OTTs only? The recent examples can be of Anurag Basu’s ‘Ludo’ on Netflix, which was an anthology styled movie and entertained the audience to the fullest.
It is a bit surprising seeing the mixed reception in theatres for Kutty Story because two of the recently released Tamil anthologies have done extremely well in the OTT platforms. Yes we are talking about Putham Pudhu Kaalai on Amazon Prime Video. It was directed by Sudha Kongara, Gautham Menon, Rajiv Menon, Suhasini Maniratnam and Karthik Subbaraj. The film was set in the period of lockdown and starred an ensemble cast including Kalidas Jayaram , Shruti Haasan, Kalyani Priyadarshan and others.
Another was from Netflix – Paava Kadhaigal
which was directed by Sudha Kongara, Gautham Menon, Vetrimaran, Vignesh Shivan. Both these movie did considerably well in the streaming platforms but when a similar themed movie got released in theatres it isn’t getting the desired response from everyone.
Since the past year there has been a considerable amount of discussion on how theatrical audience is different from the audience at home or the OTT audience. The content which works on OTT might not get the desired audience in theatres and vice versa. It will be interesting to see if the filmmakers who are venturing into the similar genre will release their content on OTTs or theatres.
