With No Originals In Offing Zee5 Resorts To Desperate Steps

Zee5 had no notable original title release last month and neither has it announced any new one for April yet. Such utter lack of original content is pretty bad for this Indian streamer which cannot rely on average Indian licensed films alone.

And the latest step to re-release their six year old original web series ‘Kaafir’ into a film now is worse and seems to come only out of desperation. But the question here is, who’s interested in it anyways now?

Most likely no one! Not that ‘Kaafir’ isn’t good. The series directed by Sonam Nair (‘Dupahiya’) and written by Bhavani Iyer (‘Raazi’, ‘Lootera’, ‘Breathe: Into The Shadows’) follows Kainaaz Akhtar (Dia Mirza), a woman from Pakistan, accidentally crosses the border and is presumed to be a militant. A few years later, Vedant (Mohit Raina), an Indian journalist, seeks justice for her.

Imagine how many cuts and edits will be needed to trim an eight episode series, where each episode spans for approximately 40 minutes, into a movie stretching for a couple of hours.

Moreover, what’s the point of doing it now other than the fact that there’s nothing much at disposal for Zee5 and it just wants to put something out on the platform. This move to release its old show into a film is nothing more than embarrassing for Zee5 and we hope it works on its original content slate soon.
