Dinesh Vijan‘s dream project of creating a horror universe between the characters of his movies has become a thing to be excited for. Vijan recently stated that the idea is to give all the characters their solo movies till they get familiar with the audience. And then it won’t be awkward when these characters comes up together on screens with each other. The recent addition to this universe is Roohi, the movie stars Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma in the lead which released on 11th March 2021. The movie is getting lukewarm to stale reviews which might hamper the hype for the planned universe.
The horror universe started off with the 2018 hit horror comedy – Stree. The movie starring Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurrana did a tremendous business at the time of it’s release. The fresh humour and catchy script was loved by every generation of the audience. Hence Stree was being considered as the benchmark for the upcoming horror comedy movies.
Seeing the success of Stree, producer Dinesh Vijan decided to convert the franchise into a full fledged horror universe with diverse characters. For this he announced the upcoming movies in the universe – Roohi, Bhediya, and Munjha. While Roohi released recently, the other two are scheduled for 2022.
Talking about the present, Roohi was set along the similar lines of horror comedy like Stree. But according to the public, the movie has failed to create even 50% of the magic and craze that Stree managed to. In the box office too, there hasn’t been enough footfalls but that is a given since we’re in mid-pandemic. All in all, Roohi was being considered as the movie which might bring in some healthy numbers into the theatres and help them regain their old limelight. But as per current situation and the word of mouth it seems difficult.
With Stree and Roohi, Dinesh Vijan’s horror universe has become perfectly balanced. With two movies still to come next year, one might expect a change in fortunes for the much anticipated horror universe. Bhediya which stars Kriti Sanon and Varun Dhawan has an interesting premise involving Werewolves. Since the audience are looking for fresh content, Bhediya might become a perfect watch from them if everything goes well.
Talking about Munjha, the movie stars Sanjana Sanghi. Munjha will be a prequel to Stree and this makes the movie a high priority. Makers cannot go wrong with either of the movies. And if they are successful in delivering both the movie perfectly, then surely we’ll be in for a treat.
