Warner Bros and ‘Wonder Woman’ film series director Patty Jenkins has announced the release of the much anticipated ‘Wonder Woman’ sequel, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, which will be on Christmas. What is even more exciting (and slightly bizarre) is that ‘WW84’ (The abbreviated form of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’) will be releasing in theaters and on the OTT platform, HBOMax, in the same month.
The film, which was initially supposed to release in theaters in June 2020, had to push its release date for next year due to the global coronavirus pandemic. It was then slated for a June-July 2021 release with both the director and Warner Bros. Productions not entertaining any thought of releasing the blockbuster on any OTT streaming platform.
That is why the release of a movie of such scale is a surprise. Unprecedented, according to WarnerMedia Chief Executive Jason Kilar. With key markets in the U.S. such as Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco still recovering from the pandemic, Warner Bros. will be expecting the international market to work its magic like it did for the Christopher Nolan blockbuster ‘TENET’. The film will come out on the streaming platform, HBOMax, but subscribers will not be required to pay anything additional to view the movie (unlike Disney+ and Mulan).
The film is said to be coming out only on HBOMax, so we can not expect an HBO and Hotstar collaboration like the previous ‘Game of Thrones’, but the film will definitely come to theaters in India (the ones which are open anyway). Hopefully, this will prompt Warner Bros. to release ‘TENET’ in the country as well. The movie will only be available on the streaming platform for one month, but it will continue running in theaters and will be available on VODs.
Patty Jenkins has written a beautiful open letter on twitter for all DC and Wonder Woman fans, explaining the decision they are making to release the film in theaters and on the OTT platform early. Read the tweet down below.
‘Wonder Woman 1984’ is expected to come out in theaters on 16th December 2020. The film will release in HBOMax on Christmas, 25th December 2020, in countries where the streaming platform is available.
