WW84 Works Its Magic: HBO Max Subscribers Surge By 50% In Final Quarter

By Binged Bureau - Dec 12, 2020 @ 12:12 pm

The cataclysmic decision to move its tent-pole film Wonder Woman 1984 to streaming on HBO Max has worked its magic for AT&T, parent company of both WarnerMedia and HBO Max. That, and the release of buzzy content such as HBO’s The Undoing, The Flight Attendant and the Euphoria Special Episode, have helped activated subscriptions rise by 50% in a very short time.

The latest subscription numbers of HBO Max tell the happy story. AT&T CEO John Stanley announced at the start of this week that HBO Max has reached 12.6 million activated subscribers as of 3rd December, a jump of nearly 50% from its closing subscription numbers at the end of the third quarter.

Back in late October, the heads at HBO Max had revealed around 8.6 million activated subscribers in the U.S., which has now seen its numbers surge by more than 4 million in less than two months. Most of those subscriptions have been added in the last month itself.

Speaking at the UBS Global TMT Virtual Conference, John Stanley also shared that viewing hours had risen 36% in the past 30 days. It is quite obvious that the news of Wonder Woman 1984 releasing on HBO Max has played a crucial role in the surge in subscribers, though the company hasn’t spelt it out as such.

This month has also seen the dropping of the bombshell – WarnerMedia has moved its entire 2021 movies slate of 17 films to the hybrid model. That means 17 of its tent pole movies will premiere simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max.

The movies are some of the biggest, and from some of the most accomplished film production companies and top-notch filmmakers. Dune, Matrix 4, Mortal Kombat, Godzilla vs Kong, Space Jam, Tom And Jerry, The Little Things, In The Heights, The Conjuring, among others, are some of the films that will release in the hybrid model.

The implications of the aforementioned development are tremendous for HBO Max. Activated subscription numbers are bound to rise, and hit the roof. It is something that AT&T is looking forward to. The company plans to amass 50 million U.S. subscribers and 75 million to 90 million globally by 2025.

The streaming business has become very important for all the primary players, in an increasingly cluttered OTT ecosystem. AT&T is getting increasingly jittery about raking in subscribers, especially since rival Disney Plus has gotten off to a spectacular start. Disney Plus announced this morning at its Disney Investor Day 2020 event that it has now got 86.8 million paid subscriptions globally.

HBO Max has a lot of catching up to do. Last week’s announcements relating to the earth-shattering ploy of moving 17 films to HBO Max should do the streaming service a world of good.

The streaming wars have well and truly heated up. Let’s see what 2021 holds for the main players!
