Netflix today announced the global release of the celebrated Taiwanese film ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ on the platform. The film is Taiwan’s “highest-grossing LGBTQ film of all time” and will premiere on Netflix globally on 23rd December, 2020.
‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ is a film based on director Patrick Liu’s high school memories. Set in 1987, when martial law ended in Taiwan, it is the story of Jia-han and Birdy, who fall in love amid family pressure, homophobia and social stigma.
As per Netflix, ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ “is about two high school boys in an all-male boarding school exploring their friendship and genuine love for each other against the backdrop of the 1980s when Taiwan recently lifted its strict martial law, amid a transition from conservative society to become the most LGBTQ-friendly country in Asia. When the boarding school begins admitting females, their relationship faces an ultimate test with the emergence of a school girl.”
The film was well received and got 5 nominations at this year’s Golden Horse Award, going on to win the award in the Best Original Song and Best Cinematography category. Golden Horse Awards are considered the most prestigious annual award for Chinese-language films.
Jing-Hua Tseng (‘Detention’) and Edward Chen play the lead role in ‘Your Name Engraved Herein’. Chen also got nominated for this year’s Best New Performer in Golden Horse Awards for his performance in the film. Talking about the film Jing-Hua and Edward said, “Love has no boundaries, regardless of your nationality, race or gender. Hopefully after watching this film, viewers can all find their path to love”.
Director Patrick Liu says, “I hope viewers can relate to LGBTQ community’s feeling of genuine affection and heartaches that are just as susceptible as everyone else. I look forward to sparking more discussions across Asia. It is my hope to erase discriminations and heal the world with more love and acceptance. As the film will stream globally soon, I am curious about viewers’ response to this film.”
‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ has been produced by Arthur Chu (Chu Yu Ning) and Oxygen Film is the production company behind it. The cinematography for the film has been handled by Yao Hung-i.
‘Your Name Engraved Herein’ will premiere globally on December 23 on Netflix.
