‘Operation Java‘ is a Malayalam cybercrime thriller film, released on the Indian OTT giant, ZEE5 on the 15th of May 2021. And since the movie made it to the OTT platform, Twitter has been exploding with ZEE5 subscribers who were appalled by the treatment of the movie at the hands of the streaming platform. Complaints, varying from lack of 4K resolution to no surround sound system from the OTT platform has been cropping up on multiple social media platforms, not just Twitter. But the major complaint that Twitterati has been focusing on, has been the subtitles. Or the lack of it, to be precise.
We were discussing about the serious issue that subtitlers face from major OTT platforms last week, with Netflix being the culprit at that time. This time, however, ZEE5 managed to forget about the English subtitles they had promised their subscription base for this hit movie. There have been many users online asking the film creators to release a pirated version of the brilliant film themselves, to show how it should be done, to the ZEE5’s operational executives. Check out the tweets at the end of this article.
‘Operation Java’ was the first critically successful Malayalam film of 2021. Based on real cases, this film portrays an investigation undertaken by the cybercrime division of the Kochi police which is done by two engineering graduates, over a period of two years. This film explores the darker side of technology and shows real-life scams that still happen to this day. Part film, part “educational thriller”, this movie did surprisingly well, all over the country. For a film like that, to face these many issues on an Indian OTT is quite shameful – no two ways about it.
Hopefully, ZEE5 will rectify their error soon. This has been a running trend on the aforementioned Indian OTT platform, according to some members of the Twitter mob. If this situation continues, we wouldn’t be surprised if both user subscribers and movie producers move away from this national OTT giant, in search of better pastures.

No 4K, No Atmos or Dolby 5.1, No subtitles
