Netflix is poised to release its latest Indian Original, the horror anthology, Ghost Stories, comprising four short horror films, directed by four maestros of Indian cinema – Karan Johar, Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee.
Zoya Akhtar’s segment stars Janhvi Kapoor, Vijay Varma, Surekha Sikri and Raghuvir Yadav. The story revolves around an old lady (Surekha Sikri) now bed-ridden, who was a certified beauty in her youth and lived a full, colourful life. A young nurse, Sameera (played by Janhvi Kapoor) arrives to care for the old lady. That’s when mysterious things start to take place around the duo.
Zoya Akhtar shared with the media,
“It is a story where the pathos linger longer than the scares. I wanted to tell a story that would be otherworldly but also make me understand my own feelings towards certain truths. I decided to thematically work with fears I have. Fear of aging, fear of abandonment, and of course — the fear of death. I have attempted to make these themes play out through women and how they experience them.”
Janhvi Kapoor shared about the story, “It is not a conventional jump scare trope-y kind of horror. So we could use a lot of long takes, which is a dream for any actor because it keeps you in the moment.”
Surekha Sikri had this to say, “It is a very real character in many ways. I often wonder what the subtext would be.”
Given the description of these three females that are primary players of the short story, the film promises to be a vastly intriguing and compelling watch.
We simply can’t wait for the anthology to drop on Netflix.
Ghost Stories streams on Netflix from the midnight of 31st December.
