Amazon MX Player is getting ready for their slate in 2025, and of course, it’s all free!
After acquiring MX Player from Times Internet in 2024 for around $30–40 million, Amazon merged it with MiniTV. Now, the revamped Amazon MX Player has a whopping 250 million monthly active users which is way more than Amazon Prime Video’s estimated 60 million.
At its ‘StreamNext’ event, the head of Amazon MX Player, announced that the platform will roll out over 100 new shows next year. These will cover everything from dramas and reality shows to fun, lighthearted series. While the platform has a solid collection of movies, the real focus is on series which brings a much higher level of engagement. However, don’t expect sports content as Amazon isn’t venturing into that space due to high costs.
So, why is Amazon doubling down on free content?
Simple. Most people in India prefer free streaming over paid subscriptions. In fact, only one in five OTT users in India actually pays for content. Amazon is playing smart by integrating entertainment with its massive e-commerce business, aiming to turn casual viewers into loyal Amazon customers.
But merely bringing a series is never enough. They have to be engaging enough for the audiences and if not, this will all go to vain.
