BBC Studios Plans To Exit India Because We Love Local Content

BBC Studios is considering shutting down its content production operations in India. This decision comes after their inability to fight against the local media landscape, which mostly dominates the streaming landscape of India. However, no final decision has been made yet, according to the company.

BBC Studios has contributed to Indian entertainment with adaptations like The Office and Criminal Justice and original shows such as Out of Love and Gaalivaana. It also has partnerships with global studios like ITV Studios and All3Media. Despite this, the current business environment has failed its model in India.

A spokesperson for BBC Studios emphasised that the company regularly evaluates its operations to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

The company continues to distribute popular global formats like Dancing with the Stars and Luther in India. It also operates BBC Earth through a partnership with Sony Pictures Networks India and runs digital platforms like BBC Player and BBC Kids on Prime Video.

This news also reminds us of a few scandals in India, including income tax raids in 2023, after the release of a controversial documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

So this news is extremely important for the overall dynamics in India. There was a point in time when the BBC used to be the mouthpiece of the colonial government in India. Now, one of their wings is forced to exit.
