Direct-To-OTT: Big Win For Thriller International Titles?

Direct-To-OTT: Big Win For Thriller International Titles?

Cinema is truly a blending pot of cultures. So much so that now, with the rampant advent of OTT platforms across the country, thousands and thousands of viewers are being exposed to not only varied domestic content, but also international films and shows, with ease.

What this basically means is added competition for Indian filmmakers. Take for example the case of the recent OTT launches of mystery thriller titles ‘It’s What’s Inside’ and ‘Caddo Lake’, on Netflix and JioCinema, respectively. Not only have both the films debuted to stellar reviews from viewers, they have also left them wanting for more.

This, essentially, poses an opportunity for Indian filmmakers to come up with stories in such genres that are continuously appealing audiences, and deviate from content like reality shows that keep getting neglected by viewers. Moreover, both aforementioned titles had a direct-to-OTT release in India.

This bears stark contrast to the numerous Indian titles that have been following the direct-to-OTT formula, merely as a mask for ‘average’ films like ‘Krispy Rishtey’ and ‘RTI’. If this continues, viewers will undoubtedly take a better liking to foreign and international content that appeals to them better than lackluster and cringe stories.

Hopefully, this will serve as a reminder for Indian filmmakers, at least those who are opting for direct-to-OTT releases, to gear up and come up with better content for viewers!
