Homebound has moved a step closer to the Academy Awards after being named among the 15 shortlisted films in the International Feature Film category. This puts the film in contention for a nomination at the 97th Oscars and marks an important moment for Indian cinema.
Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Homebound was selected as India’s official entry and has now passed the first round of voting by the Academy. Many countries submitted films in this category, but only 15 were chosen after initial screening and voting.
The shortlist includes films from across the world, with entries from Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. This wide mix shows how competitive the category has become and how strong the global field is this year.
Being shortlisted does not guarantee a final nomination, but it greatly increases a film’s visibility during awards season. Films that reach this stage often receive more international screenings and attract wider attention from audiences and critics.
For India, the inclusion of Homebound is a notable achievement. Indian films have often been praised at international festivals, but Oscar nominations have remained difficult to secure. Homebound is now closer than most in recent years.
The final five nominees will be announced on 22 January. The Academy Awards ceremony will be held on 15 March.
