JioCinema is soon to be merged with Hotstar and it will be available with a new name. But what compelled the platform to resort to collaborating with another one. JioCinema had all the money that was needed. It made some enviable big international deals over the last two years and is yet falling down.
The exhaustion of the original content making is a major reason behind this downfall. The massive surge that we had seen in 2023 is not there any more and the titles are far less serious than the previous ones. There are only two original movies in October 2024 and no shows. Two movies and two shows in September and it goes on like this. There is only one show amongst them that is worth mentioning: Shekhar Home.
Previously we had multiple titles that showed that the platform will Sustain itself even without the sports streaming collaborations. ‘Asur’, ‘Kaalkoot’ and ‘Taali’ are some of them. JioCinema did not even try to diversify The audiences with regional content, which helped a great deal when tried by platforms like Zee5 or Prime Video. JioCinema could have easily brought itself to competition with them if it strengthened its viewer base with regional originals.
Exhausting the original content making without having any significant achievement has cost JioCinema a lot and it might be a very good decision to team up with Hotstar which is a platform that excels in these matters with flair.
