Scrolling through JioHotstar’s home screen recently, one line stood out…
“Watch the best of – Live Sports (Cricket/F1/Premier League), Blockbuster Movies, Exclusive Hotstar Specials, Disney+ Originals and much more.”
That single mention of F1 has left many Indian fans raising eyebrows.
Could this be a signal of Formula 1 making a proper return to the platform? Or is it simply a placeholder, a marketing slip that raises expectations without any real intent behind it?
Here’s the catch: F1 already has its own official service, F1 TV. But in a price-sensitive market like India, putting live sports content exclusively behind yet another standalone subscription has only fragmented the viewing base. Fans who already juggle multiple OTT subscriptions often hesitate to add another costly platform for just one sport, no matter how passionate they are.
JioHotstar has historically been a major hub for live sports in India, cricket, football, even tennis at times. If they truly bring F1 back into their fold, it could make the sport more accessible to the wider audience it desperately needs in this region. If not, such messaging only risks frustrating a loyal fan base that already feels left out by the current streaming ecosystem.
For now, the message on the home screen feels more like a tease than a promise. But in a market where affordability defines audience size, platforms like JioHotstar could be the bridge F1 really needs.
