JioHotstar is gearing up for a big December with the release of two major original series, Mrs. Deshpande and Pharma. Both shows arrive on the same platform and are fronted by highly recognisable stars, which makes this moment exciting but also slightly complicated. Mrs. Deshpande is led by Madhuri Dixit, an actor whose screen presence continues to draw attention across generations. Pharma, on the other hand, stars Nivin Pauly, one of the most trusted and popular names in Malayalam cinema, especially in content driven projects.
From a content perspective, both series appear promising. Mrs. Deshpande taps into the psychological crime thriller space, while Pharma explores the darker side of the pharmaceutical industry through a grounded and realistic lens. With the Christmas season approaching, audience appetite for fresh and engaging content is high, and both shows are well placed to benefit from increased viewing time during the holidays.
However, releasing both titles around the same time also creates an internal competition for JioHotstar. Since both are headline originals with strong lead actors, they are likely to draw from the same pool of viewers. This overlap could dilute attention for each show, rather than allowing them to build momentum individually.
While it reflects well on JioHotstar’s growing content slate, the release strategy could have been spaced out to give each series its own spotlight. Staggered releases might have helped both Mrs. Deshpande and Pharma enjoy longer visibility and stronger word of mouth, instead of competing for attention during the same festive window.
