K-Drama Trend Continues: Netflix’s Next Big Sensation?

K-dramas are no longer considered a niche genre in India, given their tremendous rise in demand over the last few years.

While globally acclaimed series such as Squid Game (survival/thriller), All of Us Are Dead (zombie horror), Sweet Home (horror), and Extraordinary Attorney Woo (legal drama) have enjoyed massive streaming success in India via Netflix, it is the romantic K-dramas that many Indian OTT viewers crave. The upcoming series, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty, seems poised to become another South Korean sensation on Netflix India.

There are plenty of reasons why Indians are captivated by Korean dramas. Many romance-centred titles revolve around clean, heartwarming, and slow-burning love stories, which strongly appeal to Indian viewers. They also provide a refreshing alternative to traditional, long-running Indian TV romantic serials, thanks to their concise storytelling, high-quality production, and polished execution.

These are some of the key reasons why romantic K-dramas such as Crash Landing on You, Queen of Tears, Business Proposal, Twenty-Five Twenty-One, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, and Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha have managed to attract such a massive audience in India. And based on its latest trailer, Bon Appétit, Your Majesty looks like it could become another big hit.

Another factor that could work well in its favour is the show’s female-centric narrative, which is likely to resonate with India’s growing young female OTT audience. Plus, it has a healthy buzz on social media.

The series follows a successful French chef who time-travels to the past and finds herself in the court of a tyrannical king, who also happens to be a great gourmet. The cast features top talents such as Im Yoon-ah, Lee Chae-min, Kang Han-na, and Choi Gwi-hwa.

With its unique plot blending time travel, romance, and gourmet cooking, the show taps into the very reasons Indian viewers are so drawn to K-dramas: refreshing, high-quality, and heartwarming storytelling.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty will premiere on Netflix on August 23. Stay tuned for more updates.
