Karnataka’s Game-Changing OTT Bet: Can It Deliver?

Karnataka might soon have its very own OTT platform, something that could change the way Kannada movies reach audiences.

The state government is planning to launch it around the New Year, with a possible subscription of ₹100 a month.

A 10-member committee is already studying Kerala’s C-Space and Prasar Bharati’s Waves to understand what works and what doesn’t. The idea is simple but powerful, give Kannada films, documentaries, and cultural content the spotlight they deserve.

Thousands of Kannada movies never make it to theatres or big OTTs because private platforms don’t find them “commercial” enough. This new initiative could change that. It will also include both a subscription model for regular content and a ticket-based model for new releases, so users get more flexibility in how they watch.

But big dreams come with big challenges. The project will need ₹50 crore in funding to get started, and even then, it might take five years to break even. Building an app, managing servers, attracting users, all of that takes time and smart execution.

If Karnataka pulls this off, though, it could become a model for other states. A space where local stories finally get a home, and audiences discover films that were hidden for too long.

The idea is right. Now, it’s all about the follow-through. And that’s where most ideas fail.
