Over 500 million individuals watch Netflix worldwide, having found its way into 270 million households. The company was established in 1997 and currently creates 3,600 original programs in more than 30 languages. With so many viewers and shows, Netflix has a significant worldwide impact. As such, the corporation must consider its environmental impact in addition to portraying sustainability on screen.
35% of Netflix’s carbon emissions come from production and it has certainly increased over time. The corporation plans to replace its diesel generators with clean power equipment and its fossil fuel-consuming vehicles with electric and other low-emission vehicles to reduce these emissions.
All of the narrative productions that Netflix actively oversees, including The Piano Lesson and Bridgerton Season 3, have been subjected to testing of these new clean technologies. According to the company, these tests prevented the equivalent of 418 tons of carbon dioxide.
By employing green hydrogen to power hydrogen power units throughout its UK productions, Netflix was able to avoid emitting an estimated 146 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. This is a part of Netflix’s goal to almost eliminate its emissions by 2030.
However, in the three years since it started concentrating on sustainability in 2020, Netflix’s development has been negligible. Since the production of movies and television shows accounts for more than half of the company’s emissions, concentrating on these projects is essential.
Netflix typically does not own any of the equipment or studio space used for its productions, except one studio in Albuquerque. The corporation has solar and battery storage systems, EV fast chargers, and geothermal water loops installed in that studio. To cut down on emissions from building operations, the company is implementing a ground-source geothermal heating and cooling system at its studio site.
To entertain everyone, Netflix provides subject matter knowledge and research support to filmmakers who want to include sustainability in their TV series and films. Moreover, electric cars are featured in 90% of Netflix films and shows.
Maintaining its position at the top, Netflix continues to find new ways to efficiently entertain the audience and keep a climate goal in mind to increase their productivity.
