Netflix-Banned Controversial Film Returns on JioHotstar

The Tamil film Annapoorani starring Nayanthara is returning to streaming, but this time on JioHotstar in Hindi from October 1. The film was earlier released in theatres on December 1, 2023 and later added to Netflix India on December 29, but it was taken down after controversy. Certain scenes were hurtful to the Hindu religious sentiments, and the film became the centre of controversy.

Now, JioHotstar has picked up the rights to the Hindi dubbed version. It is expected that the film will come with many cuts and edits to avoid fresh trouble. The platform is unlikely to risk a repeat of what happened with Netflix, which never brought the film back after removing it. While the film tells the story of a young woman who dreams of becoming a chef and faces the clash of tradition and ambition, it is also clear that the release has become a sensitive issue beyond cinema.

The new release will be watched closely. JioHotstar has a wide reach and the film will find new viewers in its Hindi version, but at the same time, the platform will be careful to steer away from controversy. Annapoorani may find a second life on streaming, but its journey shows how films can sometimes struggle to balance creative vision with social reactions. The release on October 1 will reveal if the story can finally be enjoyed by audiences without the noise that surrounded its first streaming run.
