Netflix India’s Regional Push: Still Half-Hearted?

Netflix India has finally announced its first full slate of Tamil and Telugu originals. This is a big step for the platform, which has so far focused mostly on Hindi shows and films. The new list includes titles like Stephen, Super Subbu, #Love, Made in Korea, Takshakudu and Legacy. These projects cover many genres and show that Netflix now wants to connect with audiences in South India.

However, while this is a welcome move, it is also disappointing that the slate includes only Tamil and Telugu content. Netflix has often bought Malayalam films and even some Kannada movies like Kantara. But there are no original films or series from these two industries in the new line-up.

This feels unfair to Malayalam and Kannada viewers, who have supported Netflix and helped many regional films reach wider audiences. Malayalam cinema, in particular, has given India some of its best stories in recent years. Kannada films, too, have gained national attention for their strong themes and unique storytelling.

By leaving out these languages, Netflix is missing an opportunity to truly represent the diversity of South Indian cinema. Viewers across India are now open to subtitles and enjoy stories from every region. It would be great if Netflix also produced original Malayalam and Kannada projects in the future, giving every audience a chance to see their language and culture on screen.
