Anurag Basu’s Metro… In Dino opened to a highly positive response on Netflix, after performing decently in theatres. The sequel to the 2007 film Life in a… Metro didn’t break any box office records, but it managed a respectable run and generated strong word of mouth. That’s why many expected it to perform better during its OTT release, but that doesn’t seem to be the case so far.
Netflix India has released its latest Top 10 weekly movies list (August 25–31), and Metro… In Dino has landed in fifth place. In contrast, Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom, which fell flat at the box office, found new life on OTT and secured the number one spot.
Meanwhile, Fahadh Faasil’s Maareesan and Kajol’s Maa are ranked second and third, respectively.
The most surprising entry in the top five is John Abraham’s Tehran, which claimed the fourth spot and pushed Metro… In Dino down to fifth. Tehran first debuted on ZEE5 on August 14, where it became a record-breaking viewership success. And it seems there’s no stopping this John Abraham starrer on Netflix either.
Karate Kid: Legends, featuring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, currently holds the sixth spot.
The varied performance of these films on the Netflix Top 10 list highlights a fascinating trend in the Indian streaming market. While a strong theatrical run can often serve as a launchpad for OTT success, as seen with some films in the past, it’s clearly not a guaranteed formula.
The unexpected surge of a box office disappointment like Kingdom and a direct-to-OTT hit like Tehran shows that a film’s digital journey is its own beast, shaped by factors like word of mouth, star power, or even just a compelling genre that resonates with binge-watchers.
It remains to be seen whether Anurag Basu’s film can climb the ranks in the coming weeks and prove that strong word of mouth eventually translates to strong streaming numbers. Stay tuned for more updates.
