You are a subscriber of Indian OTT. You pay a monthly fee and enjoy whatever content your platform offers. Normally, most of the Indian original content is mediocre. Once in a blue moon you get something truly extraordinary like Jubilee, Curry and Cyanide and all.
Out of many reasons that gave rise to the mammoth growth of Indian OTT, access to international content was one of the major causes. People could finally ethically watch Hollywood films whenever they wanted.
But, there is a big problem in the way Indian OTT platforms acquire International titles.
You see, most international films land on a rent or buy system. That’s fine, but that’s definitely not feasible as they are usually very very expensive.
Talking about regular streaming of titles, most films never get released until the award seasons. Talking about last year, The Whale didn’t arrive on Indian OTT until it started getting applauds.
So is true about so many films.
Yesterday, Golden Globes awards took place. So many films like The Brutalist, I’m Still Here are not available in India.
They are really really good films but they will not gain recognition and Indian OTT platforms will conveniently ignore them.
That’s a major problem.
That’s the pain of being an average Indian OTT subscriber. Then people wonder why there is so much piracy in the entertainment space.
