Prime Video’s Shocking Data: Indian Shows Go Global

A few years ago, no one would have guessed that stories about a small government office in rural India or an overworked spy in Delhi would find fans in far-off countries. Today, people in places like Europe and South America are streaming Indian shows with the same excitement as local hits.

Prime Video India recently revealed that almost 25 per cent of the audience for its Indian content comes from outside the country. That means every fourth person watching an Indian series online isn’t Indian at all. It’s a surprising number and a sign that Indian storytelling is breaking new ground.

For a long time, India’s entertainment exports were all about Bollywood, the larger-than-life songs, colours and heroes. But streaming has changed what travels. Now it’s the simplicity of Panchayat or the dark realism of Paatal Lok that’s reaching people who may not even speak the language.

As Prime Video’s team explained, audiences anywhere can feel when a story is told with truth. That’s what stands out more than fancy production or borrowed ideas. Original voices are doing what formula films couldn’t.

Back home, Indians themselves are watching shows in several languages, which has made creators more open to dubbing and subtitling. This habit of crossing language lines has helped Indian content fit naturally into the global streaming world.

There’s also something exciting about who’s creating these shows now. Many writers and directors come from small towns and are telling stories rooted in real places and everyday lives. Somehow, that local flavour is what’s making the content relatable everywhere.
