SonyLIV Needs More Than Just Gullak Season 5 Now

For a streaming platform that once gave us trailblazing hits like Scam 1992, Rocket Boys, and Gullak, the recent calendar (March 2026 to June 2026) has looked surprisingly empty. SonyLIV, which carved out a niche for itself as the go-to destination for high-quality, grounded Indian storytelling, seems to be navigating an unusually long dry spell of original content.

For an OTT major competing in a hyperactive market where rivals drop new shows almost every week, these massive gaps between releases naturally raise our eyebrows.

The lull became particularly noticeable after March 19, when the platform pinned its hopes on Jazz City. Touted as a major original, the show unfortunately failed to create the expected buzz, landing with a lukewarm reception from both critics and audiences.

When a tentpole release doesn’t quite hit the mark, the wait for the next big thing feels even longer. For weeks, subscribers were left scrolling through older catalogue titles, waiting for something fresh to grab their attention.

Relief finally arrived on May 1 with the return of a fan favourite: Undekhi Season 4. Known for its gritty narrative and intense performances, the series was well-received and reminded viewers of what SonyLIV does best. However, even with that success, the momentum wasn’t sustained.

Fans are now looking at another month-long stretch of silence before the next premium original, Gullak Season 5, premieres on June 5. While the return of the Mishra family is bound to bring back the audience, a gap of this scale is a risky strategy in the current streaming landscape.

Adding to the concern, the absence of Vaibhav Raj Gupta (Annu Mishra) in Gullak Season 5 could dent viewership. As a fan-favourite pillar of the family dynamic, his missing presence risks alienating loyal audiences, making the long-awaited return a tougher sell during this critical dry spell.

In the fast-paced world of digital entertainment, consistency is just as important as quality. When a platform goes weeks, and sometimes months, without a flagship release, it risks losing the momentum that keeps a steady stream of content flowing.

SonyLIV undoubtedly has a loyal fanbase that values its premium, story-driven approach. But as the gaps between originals grow wider, the platform faces the tough challenge of keeping subscribers engaged and justified in maintaining their subscriptions during the long waits. Stay tuned for more updates.
